'Haida Totems' / Emily Carr / B.C. Archives / PDP00612 PN00095

"We reached Chatle late in the afternoon. It is situated almost the mouth of the Skidegate Inlet on the west coast in a beautiful little bay. Many poles are still standing, and many, many more are lying among the intensely thick underbrush, moss grown and rotting. There are though, some fine specimens left."

"The boat was anchored out a way and we landed one at a time in the small dugout canoe. I made a quick summary of the work to be done and was already deep in a sketch by time the others were landed."
Carr Lecture on Totems, 1913:31-34
