Caynaa

'Heina' / Emily Carr / National Gallery of Canada / 4284 RBCM PN05565

After 1927, Carr interpreted villagescapes with a new vigour. She reworked many of her earlier field sketches and turned to historic photographs for subject matter. Heina is a typical example. Although it is based on Richard Maynard's 1884 photograph, the subtle changes to the original composition demonstrate she was not a slavish copyist.
